Your role at BRE

Primary activities 

  • Working with the Assurance technical teams to develop new certification schemes. 

  • Keeping abreast of industry needs 

  • Identifying new business opportunities with the scope of Fire Safety and Electronic Security 

  • Attendance on Technical Committees that influence BRE’s Fire & security business e.g. CLC TC79 WG9 and BSI shadow committee & others (Attendance on technical committees is important to maintain industry presence, networking and identifying potential opportunities) 

  • Responsible for maintaining BRE commitment to EFSG for interlaboratory comparison exercises, i.e. Witness testing, RRTs ATL auditing etc. 

  • Business Planning: To support business planning by providing updates on the latest developments in products and standards. Identifying and preparing capital investments in equipment, processes and laboratory building infrastructure improvement.  

  • Sales and Marketing: To provide technical decision-making and steer the department future scope of activities with respect to testing and certification. To communicate to our existing and potential clients our technical expertise and testing capabilities.  

  • Technical Development: To Manage the technical development group. To effectively communicate technical developments to all staff within the department. To lead on the maintenance of the UKAS accreditation and extension of the UKAS scope. Coordinate and oversee all development projects and all technical issues that may arise from laboratory or certification staff. To attend clients’ meetings where necessary. 

  • Operation Development: To lead on the operation improvement of various processes within the department and ensure quality of the services provided with minimum technical risk to BRE. 

  • Staff Development: To communicate technical knowledge effectively and clearly to staff which includes interpretation of standards and responding to technical queries. To oversee the development of training content and delivery of training. To review and approve the competency of all staff.  

  • Standards and Research: To lead and coordinate our input to standards committee working groups for our internal BRE (LPS), National, European, and International Standards. To deal with non-standard enquiries in the aim of developing LPS standards. Focusing on strategic research and publications. 

  • Partnership Management: To lead on establishing partnership with other test houses or companies by creating Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) such as VdS/BRE(LPCB), EFSG for strategic mutual benefits. 

Global Assurance Aims 

  • Support the development of the Assurance Team Technical Cohort 

  • Identify and support the management of the BRE Technical Profile and Interactions with:  

  • Formal Standards Body Management  

  • Technical Regulatory Standards Bodies 

  • Trade Bodies 

  • Government / Authority’s Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) / Insurance / High Level Specifiers  

  • Management of LPS (Loss Prevention Services) Schemes 

  • Support delivery of BRE Academy activities related to Assurance Team activities through constant review of the BRE Academy output. 

  • Provide direction and input to Business Development decisions based on knowledge of Risk factors around technical codes and standards in this area. 

  • Support the drive in Digital Transformation leading in areas of implementation around Redbooklive and technical excellence within the laboratory and certification environments. 

  • Support the Lead in Risk Management recognition associated with changing codes and standards and associated legislation. 

  • Drive Training & Competency transformation in the Assurance Team 

  • Succession Management working with people and change team to support programmes to develop, retain and grow the technical teams and excellence. 

Local Team Activities 

  • Maintain Day to day technical support for specialist areas (FDET) 

  • Support for technical client meetings, as requested from Head of Department (HD) 

  • All commercial / costing details to be picked up through HD 

 

Your profile

We are looking for an experienced technical leader with the below: 

  • Broad and extensive experience of working within a certification and testing environment. 

  • Thorough understanding of ISO 17020/21/24/65 as applicable, and certification. 

  • Expert understanding of the EN54 standard 

  • Broad experience of reviewing the scope of the application and checking against the specifications as applicable to confirm that the team has the required knowledge and understanding of the industry sector and any applicable regulatory requirements to undertake the assessment. 

  • Good understanding of the requirements of the CPR/UKCA/MED/ as applicable, and as further described in specific criteria where available. 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Management System Standards (ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001 / 27001) as applicable 

  • Strong leader in terms of improving raising standards. 

  • Strong communicator who can influence, constructively challenge, and collaborate at all levels of the organisation. 

  • Excellent understanding of what constitutes conflicts of interest and how to manage them. 

  • Excellent understanding of impartiality and how to safeguard it.
